From Friday 16th August 2024 until Sunday 18th August 2024 we will be hosting our fourth residential weekend at the Kingswood Activity Centre in South Yorkshire. Children with alopecia aged 7-17, along with their families, can join Alopecia UK for a weekend of nature and adventure activities all within the contemporary purpose-built accommodation and high-quality learning facilities. Families have the opportunity to meet others who understand their journey, build confidence and have lots of fun!

About the role - what you'll be doing

Families attending the event will be split into groups of approximately 15, with at least one volunteer allocated to each group. You will join the group around the centre as they take part in activities. We would encourage all volunteers to take part in activities but if for any reason you can’t or there are certain ones you would prefer to opt out of please do let us know.

You will be role-modelling positive behaviour for children (this includes being comfortable in displaying your alopecia) and sharing your own alopecia journey with the family. You will help the groups get from one activity to the next.

What we will provide

  • Your Kingswood ticket (accommodation, all your food and weekend activities)
  • Travel Costs (up to £100).
  • Alopecia UK t-shirts to wear over the weekend

Skills/experience needed

  • You must be over 18
  • Approachable and welcoming - happy to be a big kid and be a bit silly!
  • Strong people skills
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Compassionate, with a passion for improving the lives of those affected by alopecia
  • Ability to promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. Please note this role requires an enhanced DBS check. Further details regarding this will be sent to those that apply.

Feedback from our previous events:

  • My daughter had never met another child with alopecia this weekend made her really realise she wasn’t on her own and it was actually more common than she had thought. We couldn’t have had a better weekend."
  • "The most memorable part of the weekend was my son facing his fears on the zip line and taking that step off the ledge (after some gentle coaxing!)! Such a confidence boost to him, and a memory he will have forever. That, and making new friends."
  • "Honestly one of the best things we have been involved in as a family. A great opportunity to see the children (and us) outside of their comfort zones, and succeeding by being supported, and supporting one another. Thank you Alopecia UK, we hope there are many more to come."
  • "Staff and volunteers were exceptional. The activities programme was great and got everybody involved and it was really good that our younger children were not forgotten about."
