Karen joined the board in 2017 when the charity Autoimmune Alopecia Research UK (AAR-UK) merged with Alopecia UK. Karen was a former Trustee of AAR-UK.

Before her retirement, Karen was a Pastoral Support Manager in a secondary school, a job she loved. Within this role, she completed a counselling course specialising in children and adolescents as well as extensive training in safeguarding.

"In 2012, I went from a full head of hair to Alopecia Universalis in a few short months. Back then, there was little support for people with alopecia and very little research work being done to look into this condition. I have therefore been very committed to pushing forward research and am a member of Alopecia UK's research committee. I am very proud of the progress that has already been made in this area. I have also built up a large network of people with alopecia and I am able to support and sign post them to areas that might help."
