Following on from all the amazing things Jen, Amy, Naomi and Kelly are doing, I thought I really had to do something to celebrate Alopecia UK’s big birthday. As I am completely terrible at keeping New Year’s resolutions I wanted to try and do something I actually stand a chance of achieving, without doing something drastic like commit to running a marathon (I detest running further than about 3 miles). I love swimming, but never get the chance anymore, so the answer was simple:
I have decided to do 15 open water swims, for 15 years of Alopecia UK. I want to do each swim in a different place, hopefully kicking it off with a (chilly) dip in my local river on New Year’s Day- and yes before you ask, I might try and stay in for more than 15 seconds!
I’m not going to set a distance for each, but I want to finish by taking part in the Swim Serpentine in September. The swim is in the lake (pond?) in Hyde Park and it is a fantastic event full of enthusiastic people who are willing and able to swim 5K in a very cold lake.
Since joining the team at Alopecia UK, I have been really impressed by the can-do attitude of everyone I meet. It really doesn’t matter who they are or what their relationship with Alopecia is, they all want to dig in and try to do something to help. To me, that’s really inspiring, so this is my chance to try and give something back.
It’s going to be an interesting year for me and for Alopecia UK- we’ll be running our second round of grant funding, working with our new lay research panel and welcoming in our new research committee members. I have projects to try and get off the ground, reports to collect and hopefully conferences to attend- alongside my other job, helping researchers to apply for grant funding. Having a series of swims to do will give me something to focus on and a reason to get out of my office chair!
