We know it can be so beneficial for parents to meet other families going through a similar situation. Feeling connected to other parents who have a child experiencing hair loss can provide a wealth of peer support and advice, help families feel less alone, and also help reduce anxiety for their child's future.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, our face to face groups were unfortunately put on hold, because of this we created a new online space to provide peer support called the 'Alopecia Café'.

Fortunately, we are now in a position where we are seeing a return of our face to face groups and events. However, we recognise that our online provision has been a welcome resource during this time and beyond. For this reason, we intend to embed online meetings into our continued support provision.

Combining these online meetings with our face to face groups, events, Facebook groups and phone and email services we hope to establish even stronger support avenues for people with alopecia.

Going forward the Alopecia UK online meetings for parents will continue in a very similar fashion to what was previously offered. Meetings take place online via Zoom providing an opportunity to meet other parents, share experiences and talk about ways you can manage your child's alopecia. These groups are open to parents who have a child experiencing any type of alopecia.

Who is this meeting suitable for?

This meeting is for parents who have a child affected by alopecia. This meeting is only open to those in the UK.

Please note, due to the sensitive nature of these meetings, we strongly advise that children are not in earshot of these meetings. If you are looking for online alopecia support for your child, please see here.

What can you expect of this meeting?

At the beginning of each meeting, you will be introduced to the Alopecia UK hosts. We will make you feel welcome and run through some basic housekeeping.

Each meeting will be capped at 24 people. Any meeting with over 10 attendees will be split into two rooms.

From there, attendees will have the opportunity to chat and listen to the experiences of other families. You can ask questions, answer questions, receive advice, give advice and hopefully come away from the meeting feeling more confident about your child's alopecia journey. All of this is done from the comfort of your own home, perhaps with a recommended cuppa and biscuit!

We know that it can be nerve-wracking to meet people for the first time. Some attendees of our online sessions have told us they felt nervous logging-on but were very glad they joined. If anyone is feeling particularly nervous about joining a session, feel free to contact the AUK Team in advance and we can try to reduce any nerves you may have.

Who will host the meeting?

The meeting will be primarily facilitated by Alopecia UK staff member Kerry (seen in the picture to the right) and one of our lovely volunteers (Paula or Gemma).

Kerry has worked in mental health for over 15 years and has a PhD focused on the psychological impact of skin conditions (including alopecia) and interventions to support people and improve wellbeing.
