Event details:

On Saturday 9th April 2022 we will be hosting our seventh weekend at the Alton Towers Theme Park in Staffordshire. Anyone with any type of hair loss (along with family/friends) can join Alopecia UK for a day of fun, support and of course, rollercoasters! See the full event here.

Volunteer Role Description:

Time commitment/Frequency:  A few days ahead of the event we will need all the volunteers to join us for a Zoom team meeting to go over some crucial volunteering information.

You will be required to arrive at the Premier Inn in Uttoxeter on Friday 8th April. (We have a very early start Saturday morning and we have some volunteering items we need to hand out ahead of the event hence why we ask people to stay at the hotel the night before).

You will be finished by approximately 6pm on Saturday 9th April and can either go home or stay the Saturday night as well.

Location of Accommodation: Premier Inn, Derby Rd, Uttoxeter ST14 5AA
Location of Alton Towers: Farley Ln, Alton, Stoke-on-Trent ST10 4DB
(We normally carpool from the hotel to Alton Towers on Saturday morning)

Information about the role – why are we facilitating this event?

Rollercoasters and theme parks can typically be avoided by those with alopecia which is why we organise the annual trip to Alton Towers Theme Park.  The trip was born as an awareness event but has grown to be a very supportive event too.  A crucial part of the whole day is the fact that everyone who is part of the Alopecia UK trip wears the blue Alopecia UK t-shirts and/or hoodies on top of their clothing.  This creates a supportive and friendly atmosphere in the park and gives everyone a confidence boost, enabling those with alopecia to just relax and enjoy their day with family and friends.

We do facilitate groups to go round the park together so they can meet others affected by alopecia as this is a huge part of the day.  However, some people choose to go round the park in their own family/friendship groups, either for all or part of the day.  It is up to the individuals attending.  We just want everyone to enjoy their day and have fun!

About the role – what you’ll be doing (come rain or shine! 😉 )

  • welcoming people in the morning and helping them feel at ease
  • facilitating groups to go round the park throughout the day
  • ensuring groups get to arranged meet-ups in time
  • be willing to put your own wants/needs regarding rides to one side. Please note: we try to accommodate everyone's first choice of group but this may not always be possible. You can see more about the groups here - https://www.alopecia.org.uk/faqs/groups
  • just general all-round facilitation of fun!

What we will provide

  • Alton Towers theme park ticket
  • Alopecia UK t-shirt
  • Contribution towards accommodation costs (if choosing to stay in our booked accommodation – Premier Inn twin rooms. Please note you will need to share with someone of the same gender)
  • Contribution towards travel costs (up to the value of £20)
Being a small charity it is helpful for us to keep our costs down where we can. If you are in a position to pay for your own travel, we would greatly appreciate that. However, we appreciate that for some it can be quite a way to travel and as such, if travel is a barrier to you volunteering at this event we are happy to contribute towards those costs.
  • Breakfast snack pack for Saturday Morning
  • Sandwich for Saturday Lunchtime

You will need to pay:

  • Towards accommodation costs (£20 per night)
  • Towards your own travel expenses
  • Any additional food or event costs (E.g food Friday evening and Saturday evening if choosing to stay)

Skills/ experience needed

Essential skills:

  • Must be over 18
  • Strong people skills - good at facilitating conversations and introducing people to each other
  • Reliable and trustworthy
  • Friendly, welcoming, supportive
  • An understanding of alopecia and what Alopecia UK does.
  • Ability to promote the safety and wellbeing of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Essential trait:

To have alopecia and be prepared to have it on show OR to be a parent of someone with alopecia. We need the majority of our volunteers to be people with alopecia.  A big part of the volunteer role is role modelling.  An important part of the day for younger or less confident attendees is meeting and spending time with those who are comfortable and confident with their alopecia.

Please note this role requires an enhanced DBS check (for all) and a character reference check for all new volunteers.

What happens after I submit my application?

Once we receive your application a member of the team will contact you directly. Please note depending on the demand for volunteer spaces we may not be able to guarantee everyone a space. If you are not successful as one of the volunteers, then please do not be discouraged and do still come along to the actual day and meet everyone. Going along to events is often a good way to start getting more involved with the charity.
