We know that meeting others with alopecia can play a huge part in a child's alopecia journey. Not only can it provide a wealth of peer support and advice, and help children feel less alone and understand their feelings are perfectly normal, it also helps reduce anxiety and build confidence.  In order to support children with their alopecia journey, we facilitate online meetings via Zoom that provides a unique opportunity for children to meet others with alopecia in a safe, supportive and fun online space.

Who is this meeting suitable for? 

This meeting is most suitable for children with alopecia aged 7 - 12.

What can you expect at this session?

At the beginning of each session, you will receive a warm welcome from Claire, Anna & Maryam, our AUK Kids Activity Group volunteers. Each session will have a set theme and will include the following:

• an icebreaker
• a couple of fun activities

Each meeting will be capped at 12 children. A parent needs to be present in the room for the duration of the session. Please note that registration for this session will close on Sunday 1st December 2024.

Who will host the meeting? 

The meeting will be facilitated by our Alopecia UK volunteers, Claire, Maryam & Anna.

Claire says 'Since the age of twelve, I have experienced the challenges of living with alopecia areata. Alopecia UK is a fantastic charity, that provided me with support and guidance when I was living away from home at university. I have volunteered so that I can give back and support, inspire, and encourage others who are navigating their alopecia journey, to ensure that people feel connected and part of the alopecia community.' 

Anna says 'Having developed Alopecia Totalis at the age of 8 and now having children of my own at that age as well as teaching young children, it has made me reflect on that part of my journey.  Looking back meeting others in a similar situation and seeing someone much further along the journey would have been immensely helpful as at that stage I felt I was the only one.  It has made me want to volunteer to be that other person.  Alopecia hasn’t stopped me in life, I have a lovely husband and children, a career and if anything it has made me take full advantage of the things I can have an impact on in my life.  The first part looking back for me was the trickiest.  I hope I can help others in their journeys.'

Maryam says "I'm Maryam, and I've had chemical alopecia as well as traction alopecia. I've made the decision to use my experience from this journey to volunteer and give back to this incredible community by providing continuous support to children and adults coping with the condition."

How can my child join the meeting?

• Head to 'Register for a space' below and select the number of children you would like to register for. Click 'BOOK'.
  (Parents do not need to register for their own space. In most circumstances, the quantity will be 1. Situations, where this may not be the case, would be if multiple siblings had alopecia and would also like to attend.)
  
  
• Once you have clicked 'BOOK' you will be asked to complete a few questions. Please ensure your email is correct as this is how we will contact you to confirm your space. Once completed please click 'CONFIRM'. 
  
  
• This will take you to the 'basket'. A reminder all our meetings are completely free to attend, there is however opportunity at this point to provide an optional donation to help us continue the work we do, should you wish to. Once ready please click 'COMPLETE PURCHASE'.
  
  
• You will then receive a confirmation email. Should there be any queries regarding your registration one of our team will get in touch. Two weeks before the meeting you will receive a reminder email, in this email will be the Zoom meeting link. This link is only for you and must not be shared elsewhere. You will also be sent a reminder closer to the time.
