A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of conveyer belt). The plane moves forwards, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in the opposite direction). Can the plane take off or not?

I saw this puzzle on a forum a few years ago, and I did actually solve it without google, though other posters helped figure it out along the way!

I'm playing Professor Layton on the DS right now, so have puzzles on the brain.

Well yeah, if it built enough speed and the wind was on it's side to propel it slightly - then yeah it can take off.

The plane would go along the runway building speed and soon it could possibly take off
is that right?

You're right Palewolf! The plane can take off, it can move forwards despite the conveyor belt runway moving in the opposite direction. Because the plane is propelled forwards by it's engines, the wheels are irrelevent to it, they just serve to carry the plane as apposed to it dragging along the runway on it's undercarriage. So no matter how fast the runway moves in the opposite direction, the plane will continue to move forwards. Good job :)
